Flow & Flexibility:


The heart of this module is Flow Theory. 


Flow Theory is the name given to the Theory of Optimal Experience - explaining what's going on in the mind when you're having a really good time. 


Understanding Flow opens up huge possiblities when you're designing and delivering workshops. 


On a surface level, it's great to understand how to try to help students to enjoy your work.

If they enjoy it, they are likely to choose to engage more and for longer.

At a deeper level, Flow Theory offers insight into how to construct and give feedback on exercises. 


At the heart of enabling Flow is to know how to negotiate the relationship between challenge and ability. It has profound implications for structuring work and empowering students to find their own ways of engaging with work. 


It also opens up strategies for working with mixed ability groups.


In this module I look at some ways of designing exercises to enable Flow (also drawing on the pedagogical work in module 3)

About me

I've been teaching, directing, performing, writing and  researching for thirty years. I started from working as a performer in Physical Theatre, but over time my work grew to embrace theatre, dance, circus,  and other body-based disciplines, with a particular focus on ensemble,  physical theatre, improvisation, psychophysicality and presence. 

I've worked in almost every area of professional, institutional and community teaching across Europe, the Americas, India, China, Australia and online. I'm the author of three books and for several years ran a  practice-based MA at a UK University. 


I've taught extensively in institutions such as India’s National School of Drama, The National Institue of Circus Arts in  Australia, Universidad Pontificada in Colombia, the Balletakademien in Sweden, The University of Western Macedonia in Greece, Hangzhou Normal University in China, The National Autonomous University of Mexico and many others.
